Are Water Fountains Recommended for Dogs? A Guide

Yes, a water fountain can be a useful option for dogs, especially if your dog seems interested in moving water or tends to ignore a standard bowl. It is not essential, though: the most important thing is that you provide your dog with enough fresh, clean water every day in a container they will readily use.

Some dogs may find the sound or movement of a fountain inviting, while others may prefer still water or feel uncertain around an unfamiliar device. We recommend paying attention to your dog’s preferences and keeping a regular bowl available when you first introduce a fountain.

Choose a fountain with a stable base and a drinking area your dog can reach comfortably, and consider its capacity in relation to your dog’s size and how often you can refill it. If you have more than one pet, allow for their combined water needs and watch to make sure each animal can drink without being crowded out.

Our team also suggests considering how easily you can take the fountain apart for cleaning and whether replacement filters are readily available. Place it where your dog can reach it easily, and keep the cord safely out of reach if the model uses electricity.

Set the fountain near your dog’s usual drinking spot and let them investigate it without pressure, offering their familiar bowl alongside it. If your dog seems hesitant, give them time to adjust and make sure they continue drinking from another source.

Refresh the water daily, remove any visible debris, and wash the fountain and its components according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace filters as directed, and check the water level regularly so your dog has access to water and the pump does not run dry.

A regular bowl can be a simple choice for dogs who prefer still water, for homes where an electrical fountain is inconvenient, or as a backup during a power outage. You can also use a portable bowl when you are away from home, provided you bring enough fresh water and offer it regularly.
