Really Good AI Prompts for Everyday Ideas and Decisions

Really good AI prompts tell the tool what you want to accomplish, give it relevant context, and describe an answer you can use. For example: “I’m choosing between two weekend plans; ask me three questions about my priorities, then compare the options in a table.”

If you want ideas rather than a recommendation, change the task: “Give me five low-cost ways to spend a Saturday with a friend, including one indoor option and one that requires no advance planning.” The first prompt helps you make a decision; the second gives you a range of possibilities.

For self-reflection, our team prefers prompts that invite questions before conclusions: “Ask me about three moments when I felt proud, frustrated, or energized, then help me name values that might connect them.” This gives you room to decide which ideas fit instead of treating the AI’s first interpretation as a fact about you.

To move from ideas to everyday choices, try: “Help me compare the values I say are important with how I spent my time last week; point out possible gaps without judging me.” You can leave out private details and use broad descriptions of your activities if that feels more comfortable.

“Write something interesting” leaves almost every choice open, while “Write three opening lines for a cozy mystery set in a small-town bakery, each with a different mood” gives you distinct options to assess. A constraint such as length, audience, tone, or setting often makes the response easier to use.

For brainstorming, you might ask: “Suggest ten names for a neighborhood book club that feel welcoming rather than formal, and explain the tone of your three favorites.” If none work, tell the tool what missed the mark—perhaps the names felt too playful—and ask for another round.

Your first prompt can start a conversation rather than end one: ask, “Which parts of my request did you make assumptions about?” or “Give me a simpler version I could put into action today.” When an answer sounds confident but depends on facts, verify those facts before you rely on it.
