Best Travel Cages for Dogs: How to Choose

The best travel cage for your dog depends first on whether you’re driving or flying. For car trips, we recommend a sturdy crate that fits securely in your vehicle and gives your dog room to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally; for flights, start with your airline’s current pet rules before choosing a carrier.

A soft-sided carrier can be convenient for a small dog traveling in an aircraft cabin, but it must meet the airline’s size and ventilation requirements. A rigid crate may be appropriate for other travel arrangements, provided it meets the transport provider’s rules and your dog can rest comfortably inside.

Measure your dog from nose to base of tail and from floor to the top of the head or ears, whichever is higher, then compare those measurements with the cage’s usable interior space. The right fit allows natural movement without leaving a small dog in an unnecessarily oversized enclosure that could shift during travel.

Look for secure latches, adequate ventilation, smooth interior surfaces, and materials you can clean after a trip. In a car, follow the crate and vehicle manufacturers’ instructions for placement and restraint rather than assuming any cage will stay put during a sudden stop.

Give your dog time to explore the cage at home, then build up from short, positive sessions to longer periods with the door closed. Before a long drive, a brief practice ride can help you see whether your dog is comfortable and whether the cage remains secure in its planned position.

Pack familiar bedding if it fits safely, along with water and supplies for breaks. Our Collapsible Silicone Dog & Cat Travel Bowl is a foldable dish you can consider for stops; our team would still plan regular opportunities for your dog to drink, stretch, and relieve themselves.

For a dog that chews or pushes against doors, a more robust rigid crate may be a better choice than a soft-sided carrier. For a small, calm dog traveling where a soft carrier is permitted, the lighter, more flexible format may be easier for you to handle.

Whatever style you choose, prioritize your dog’s size, behavior, and travel conditions over a “best overall” label. We’d select the cage only after confirming it fits your dog, your vehicle or carrier, and the rules for the trip.
